At Canada Rubber Group Inc. (CRGI), fuel tank cushions are a rubber part we are sometimes asked to supply to vehicle programs.

Fuel tank cushions are an example of what are commonly called NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) parts. NVH parts are used to reduce the noise and vibration experienced in a vehicle. Vehicle noise can arise from a variety of sources and NVH parts address these noise sources by interrupting, absorbing, or reducing the sources of noise. Typically, an NVH part consists of a molded or formed rubber part which performs the noise reduction function.

About fuel tank cushions

Fuel tank cushions are used in automotive vehicle manufacture to isolate the vehicle fuel tank from the supporting straps which affix the tank to the vehicle body. The fuel tank cushion often consists of an extrusion strip of EPDM rubber that is affixed onto the straps which secure the fuel tank onto the vehicle body, thus isolating the fuel tank from its supporting carriers.

OEM companies also use rubber die cut pads that are affixed to mounting brackets using a pressure sensitive adhesive to bond to the metal. The mounting brackets attach the fuel tank to the vehicle. Once in place, the fuel tank cushion prevents the fuel tank from abrading on the mounting brackets, preventing unnecessary wear and noise.

CRGI fuel tank cushions and other automotive rubber parts

As a supplier of molded and fabricated rubber parts to many of the world’s leading automakers, CRGI has extensive experience in supplying fuel tank cushions and other automotive rubber parts. We can supply custom molded and fabricated rubber parts for many vehicle applications. We can produce parts from a wide variety of rubber compounds and grades, from the most basic commercial materials to high performance problem solving elastomers. Examples of automotive rubber parts we have supplied include the following:

In addition to molded and fabricated solid rubber parts, CRGI also produces closed and open cell sponge parts to service automotive applications for air dams, draft diversion, hood seals, vibration dampening, noise control, electronics, and appliance applications. As with our solid rubber parts, we provide a range of packaging and supply options to improve our customers’ efficiency in transportation, handling and storage.

In addition to our global sourcing and supply, our automotive rubber products capabilities extend to planning, distribution and logistics, and data sharing. All aspects of our operations conform to the ISO 9001:2008 standard, and we have a proven capability in supplying products which meet ASTM D2000 line call-outs, as well as the material specifications of major automakers.  In those cases where a new specification is required, we work with our supply chain partners to develop an appropriate solution that meets or exceeds all requirements.
