High Volume Kiss Cut and Kiss Slit Parts

A recent blog explained the process of producing kiss cut and kiss slit parts. At CRG, we service the needs of customers who require either short run (low-volume) and long run (high-volume) production of kiss cut and kiss slit parts. In this blog, we look at the high-volume production of kiss cut and kiss slit parts using the rotary die cutting process.

Certain industrial and automotive applications require the high-volume production of kiss cut and kiss slit parts. OEM producers of machinery and equipment often require large runs of parts to service their production needs, while automotive OEM’s and Tier-1 suppliers require high-volume runs to service the needs of vehicle programs

Kiss Cut and Kiss Slit Parts: Traditional Die Cutting

Traditionally, kiss cut and kiss slit parts have been produced using a steel rule die mounted on a travelling head press. In this process, the material to be cut is positioned over the die and the press head is engaged to force the material onto the die where it is cut. Kiss cutting or slitting with steel rule dies is better suited to smaller production volumes as the process is somewhat slower.

Kiss Cut and Kiss Slit Parts: High-Volume Production with Rotary Die Cutting

When high production volumes are required, producing kiss cut and kiss slit parts with rotary die cutting is the preferred method. Compared to traditional steel rule die cutting, rotary die cutting provides unmatched speed and efficiency in the production of kiss cut and kiss slit parts.

At CRG, we use rotary die cutting equipment equipped with three to six top-of-web anvil positions. Fitted with large anvils, which are either fixed or removable, CRG’s rotary die cutting equipment can be used for zero-tension laminating projects, island placement projects, and other fabricating challenges. Most importantly, with rotary die cutting, CRG can perform a variety of operations on a single piece of equipment, including kiss-cutting, kiss-slitting, guillotine-cutting, laminating, wind-up, and part printing. This feature improves production efficiency and eliminates the need for costly secondary operations.

Advantages of Rotary Die Cutting for Kiss Cut and Kiss Slit Parts

For industrial and automotive applications, rotary die cutting can ensure consistent quality in produced parts. The speed of rotary die cutting allows large volumes of cut product to be supplied Just-In-Time or as needed, eliminating the need to store or inventory cut parts. CRG rotary die cut products are usually supplied in roll form to enable ready use and application in customers’ production processes. CRG rotary die cut parts separate cleanly from the release liner, reducing scrap and the need for rework as parts are being consumed and applied.

High-Volume Industrial and Automotive Kiss Cut and Kiss Slit Parts

Kiss cut and kiss slit parts can be rotary die cut using a variety of materials, purpose-suited for end-use applications. Materials that can be rotary die cut include elastomers (silicone and non-silicone), foams and sponges (silicone and non-silicone), PVC plastics, felts and flocks, corks, non-wovens, and specialty materials such as foils, films and laminates. Examples of kiss cut and kiss slit parts for industrial and automotive applications that CRG can supply with rotary die cutting include the following:

  • Rubber (silicone and non-silicone) gaskets and seals

  • Closed and open-cell foam and sponge (silicone and non-silicone) gaskets and seals

  • Stripping

  • Rubber washers and spacers

  • Parts for suppressing noise, vibration and harshness (NVH)

  • Parts for isolation and insulation

  • Parts for shielding against RFI and EMI
