A Quick Guide to Performance Sheet Rubber Materials

High quality sheet rubber from American Biltrite an excellent choice for fabricated rubber products and parts

Over the 25-plus years that we have been in business, we have helped our customers address their application challenges with products fabricated from American Biltrite sheet rubbers. As one of our preferred supply chain partners, American Biltrite provides ASTM grade performance sheet rubbers that are an excellent choice for products servicing a wide variety of applications. Products we have fabricated from American Biltrite sheet rubber include gaskets, sleeves, chutes, and other miscellaneous products. In this blog we summarize the American Biltrite sheet rubbers that we often use to manufacture finished products.

Natural (NR)

Natural rubbers have high tensile strength, and superior resistance to abrasion and tearing. Products made from natural rubber exhibit excellent rebound elasticity, good flexibility at low temperatures, and excellent adhesion to fabric and metal where required. Natural rubber is ideal for: cement sleeves, lining chutes, hose, tanks, cyclones, cleat blocks, hopper curtain, squeegees, and ballistic applications.

Styrene-Butadiene (SBR)

SBR rubber offers excellent impact strength, very good resilience, tensile strength, and abrasion resistance and flexibility and low temperatures. Styrene-butadiene rubber is ideal for: basic gaskets, washers, hose, skirtboard, scrapers, and protective covers.

Neoprene-Polychloroprene (CR)

Neoprene rubbers provide good inherent flame resistance, moderate resistance to oil and gasoline, excellent adhesion to fabrics and metals, very good resistance to weather, ozone and natural aging, good resistance to abrasion and flex cracking, and a very good resistance to alkalis and acids. Neoprene-polychloroprene rubber is ideal for: gaskets, washers, seals for doors and windows, hose, and anywhere mild oil resistance is required.

Nitrile (NBR)

American Biltrite nitrile rubbers provide very good resistance to oil and gasoline, resistance to petroleum-based hydraulic fluids, wide range of service temperatures, good resistance to hydrocarbon solvents, and very good resistance to alkalis and acids. Nitrile rubber is ideal for: machinery gaskets, in and around oil and gas handling equipment, heat and oil resistant belting, hose, wire and cable.

Butyl (IIR)

American Biltrite butyl rubbers provide outstanding impermeability to gases and vapours, very good resistance to heat, oxygen, ozone and sunlight, high energy absorption (damping), excellent resistance to alkalis and oxygenated solvents, good hot tear strength, and superior resistance to water and steam. Butyl rubber is ideal for: gaskets, seals, tire inner tubes, sport ball bladders, and hose.

Ethylene Propylene Diene (EPDM)

EPDM rubbers provide excellent resistance to heat, ozone, and sunlight; very good flexibility at low temperatures; good resistance to alkalis, acids and oxygenated solvents; superior resistance to water and steam; and excellent colour stability. Ethylene propylene diene rubber is ideal for: Gaskets, washers, weather-stripping, automotive, conveyor belting, hose, and electrical.

Fabric Reinforced Rubber

When applications call for maximum conformity and deformation resistance, American Biltrite offers reinforced sheet rubber in several popular combinations of fabric, and compounds. Fabric reinforced rubber presents good dimensional stability under high compression loads. Fabric reinforced rubber is ideal where dimensional stability under high compression loads is required, especially where mechanical fastening is essential.
