Our recent blog on parts produced from Formex® flame retardant electrical insulating material highlighted an important aspect of CRG’s business – producing and supplying die cut parts for electrical applications.
In producing die cut parts for electrical applications, CRG works with a number of materials. These include the following:
Formex®. Die cut parts from Formex® can be readily formed, bent or scored. Formex® parts are flame retardant, have excellent dielectric strength, and chemical resistance. The superior flexibility of Formex®, together with its flame retardancy and superior dielectric performance make it a preferred material for producing die cut parts for electrical applications.
Kapton®. Die cut parts made from Kapton® high temperature polyimide film support applications in aerospace, military, automotive, and telecommunications. Precision cut parts produced from Kapton® are often used in vehicle subassemblies, mobile phones and cameras, computers, and more.
Nomex®. Nomex® is an aramid electrical insulating material. It has excellent dielectric properties, as well as good temperature and mechanical resistance. Parts produced from Nomex® are often used in transformers and military-grade applications. Nomex® can be laminated to polyester or polyimide/polyamide film to produce parts that combine the properties of these materials.
Mylar®. Mylar® optically clear material is often used to produce die cut parts for component insulation. A variety of grades are available.
Mica sheet. Mica sheet can be can be readily cut and punched to produce parts that are ideally suited for high-temperature applications. Die cut parts from mica sheet are often used in HVAC applications.
In processing these materials into finished parts, CRG uses both traditional and CNC production methods. Traditional die cutting employs steel rule dies to produce the finished parts, while CNC production eliminates the need for tooling and achieves greater precision in the finished part. The choice of which technology to employ rests on a consideration of various factors, including the production quantity requested, and required edge clearances, tolerances, orientation, etc.
Often, die cut parts for electrical applications require to be laminated or supplied with an adhesive backing. CRG maintains extensive capabilities for the laminating, scoring, slitting and kiss cutting of parts, as well as the application of adhesive backings.
