NVH Materials

CRGI carries a wide range of noise-reducing materials, often known as NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) materials in the industry. NVH materials are ideal for absorbing noise and vibration. CRGI fabricates noise and vibration-reducing parts from NVH materials such as rubber, cork, foam, foam/film laminates, and felt. All of our NVH materials are available in sheet or roll form in varying thicknesses.

NVH materials and parts are widely used in automotive applications. Parts fabricated from NVH materials are often used to dampen and deaden the sources of noise and vibration in vehicles. Outside of automotive applications, customers in a wide variety of industries can also benefit from using NVH materials and parts to reduce the noise and vibration emanating from process equipment and machinery, as well as manufactured products.

All parts that we produce from NVH materials can be produced with an acrylic or rubber-based adhesive, kiss-cut, and supplied as peel-and-stick in either individual pad or roll format.

Rubber as an NVH Material

Rubber, being the wonderfully versatile material that it is, is an ideal NVH material. Rubber works well in these applications due to its physical properties of high density and consistency. The high density of rubber serves to absorb sound and vibrations, while the consistency allows sound and vibration to be evenly distributed across the material. In addition, rubber compounds of varying thickness can be used to control the degree to which sounds and vibrations are dampened. By varying the thickness of the material employed, one can achieve less or more dampening as required.

Cork as an NVH Material

In addition to rubber, cork is an excellent NVH material. Like rubber, cork is excellent at dampening the noise and vibration resulting from impacts and shocks, as well as noise transmitted through structures and the air. In addition, cork sheet can be strategically placed in a room to improve acoustics and keep extraneous noise out. An interesting application of cork as an NVH material is the use of cork underlay beneath tile, ceramic, and wooden floors to reduce sound and increase thermal insulation.

Foam Sheet and Laminate NVH Materials

Foam sheet is another NVH material which supports a variety of applications. CRGI carries a variety of foam sheet and foam and film laminates with superior NVH properties. Products and parts fabricated from foam sheet work well in applications where there is exposure to harsh conditions and chemicals. CRGI can supply NVH foam parts fabricated from foam of varying types and thicknesses, and all parts are custom fabricated to customer specifications.

Types of NVH foam sheet and foam/film laminates that we can fabricate parts from include the following:

  • Polyester faced foam. This foam dampens low-frequency noise and vibrations. The polyester facing makes this product well-suited for hostile environments.

  • Sandwich barrier foam. This foam uses two layers of foam laminated on either side of a film barrier.

  • Urethane film faced foam. This lightweight product offers excellent sound absorption with minimal thickness and weight.

Felt NVH Material

Felt is a preferred NVH material for automotive applications. CRGI has supplied leading automakers with custom cut felt parts for NVH applications, including roof headliners to reduce cabin noise, as well as trunk liners, and jack housings.
