Steam Gaskets

Gaskets from NA-1122 compressed sheet offer superior performance in steam

Applications involving either saturated or superheated steam can be challenging in terms of finding the right gasket. These applications can involve high temperatures and pressures, as well as thermal cycling over a wide temperature range. Therefore, steam gaskets must be capable of servicing applications involving high peak temperatures and pressures as well as moisture levels.

Steam gaskets have to service applications involving either saturated or superheated steam. Saturated steam is commonly known as boiler steam. Superheated steam has a higher temperature for a given pressure than saturated steam. When choosing steam gaskets, it is important to determine that the gasket will service the steam pressures and temperatures that will be encountered within the application.

Steam gaskets also have to be capable of service the range of pressures and temperatures that will be encountered over the thermal cycle within an application. The gasket must provide an effective seal across the range of pressures and temperatures expected over the cycle.

Canada Rubber Group Inc. (CRGI) can provide steam gaskets cut from materials suitable for steam applications. A material we often recommend for steam gaskets is style NA-1122 sheet from Teadit North America.

Style NA-1122 is a sheet rubber that possesses superior thermal stability in thermal cycling applications. This sheet rubber is an excellent choice for steam gaskets designed to service both saturated and superheated steam applications. NA-1122 is also a suitable material for applications involving petroleum derivates, ethanol, chemical products and general services.

NA-1122 sheet is produced from a combination of inorganic fibers and special fillers, which are then bonded with nitrile rubber (NBR). The sheet is manufactured through a hot calendar process and is also available in a wire-reinforced style.

Service limits for NA-1122 sheet include: continuous temperature up to 806°F; peak temperature of 1022°F; continuous pressure of 1480 psi; and peak pressure of 2177 psi. In sealability tests, NA-1122 sheet reached its target of work above 800°F and 1480 psi without leakage. In thermal cycling tests, NA-1122 sheet was submitted to numerous thermal cycles (more than 10 daily cycles) with a seating stress of 5800 psi, and temperature increases up to 800° F. Both laboratory and field test have confirmed the higher performance of NA-1122 compressed sheet.

Using NA-1122 sheet, CRGI can manufacture steam gaskets in a variety of sizes and shapes. These gaskets are precision cut using the latest production techniques, including waterjet and flex/flash cutting, assuring precise dimensions and tight tolerances.
